Glass of the Classes

The real reason behind the renowned stem-and-bowl design of the ubiquitous wine glass as we have come to know it is thus... Read on unless you wish to stay in blissful ignorance!

Glass of the Classes

The design of the traditional wine glass has an aloof purpose: to remind both members of the classes of their lot and standings. It was a genius way to ensure that the rich need not acknowledge the poor with a touch whence being given a bit of wine.

The servile tersely grips the uncomfortable stem betwixt his fingertips handing it over to the polite gentile who enjoys options such as cradling it from the bottom of the bowl or grasping it with their innate elegence. Ofcourse this was lost on Nigel, who flaunted his generosity to his servants, spouting naive nonsense to his rich friends such as, "Paul LOVES his life here don't you Paul?"

Ironically, they both knew that were Paul's hand to touch Nigel's in the hand off, it would be a transgression. The Countess however played a different game and eyed him as the regal Osprey before plunging toward the hapless mouse in the golden fields. Noting the dear attentiveness Paul employed day and night, she stole glances at his healthy shape.

"The muscles of servitude strengthen greater than than those of privledge" she mused as she surveyed his admirable build. And whence she ordered a glass her cradle came within millimeters of his fingers tips. "Next glass", she thought. "Those millimeters will disolve. And with them whole lineages and bloodlines between us. Such is the seductive power of the "Glass of the Classes."
