It was in the depths of October 2021 and I embarked on a prompt of simply “Classic Horror”. I took it upon myself to rewatch an old favorite. I am always taken aback by the sheer mastery of suspense in the ‘Black Lagoon’ film. I think it is easily the most thrilling of the Universal’s monster films. The cinematography scenes are so good that one thinks the camera man was himself a ‘Gil Man’ as well. I loved having the chance to explore it with art and story and character. I adore black and white films and as much as I wanted to dab some green ink to the Creature I loved leaving gold as the only color.

Here our Heroine has a moment by herself in the Amazon river and she cant wait to express her water-spirit self. Little does she know that a mysterious creature has fallen in love with her. I like to point out that this is my favorite scene in the film- it deals with suspence but a strange forbidden romance. Its the moment where we see the Gilman- though fearsome feels the utmost respect for our heroine when it is just the two of them. I have always loved that about this scene. Decades later- Guillermo Del Toro was hired to bring this film back- but he left du to creative differences- which were among other things- he wanted to make it a lovestory between the Gilman and the Ingénou. Unfortunately Universal balked and Del Toro left… then he made that movie anyway and called it “The Shape of Water”. And he won best picture.
